Home Brewers.

I just started recieving WVO from a new company and i noticed it is really dark. My first batch with the new oil turned out ok but even the B-100 was really dark. I have washed it twice and it has gotten lighter but still i am not happy with it. I was woundering if i did my calculations wrong and added to much lye would that darken the finished product? if so i think that is my problem .. PH levels are ok 7.9 but seems dark. Also i am using about a 23% methinal mix i dont think that would make a difference but if anyone has any information on why so dark please let me know.

Thanks

The color of the finished product is directly related to the wvo. If it was dark to begin with it is probably just fine. Dark and clear is good, dark and cloudy is bad. If you are still concerned, try to process a small batch starting with finished product and see if you settle out any more glycerin.

No i sure dont have any pics yet but i did make a small batch last night and it is clear just dark.. I washed it a few more times and it is lighter in color. The oil i normally work with is cleaner and uses less lye. I had a lot of glycerin out of this batch. I was worried that i mis-calculated my numbers so i tried again and it came out the same. I think it will be fine.. Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up

I finally got the recipe correct. It took me a few because of the darkness of the oil .. h That really threw me off. I have never made any batches from oil that dark before.. It is darker than coke but a few washes and it is looking great. Thanks for the help .

I had to add more lye. Since the oil was used so bad it took a little more than my origional calculation. the PH levels were off and it was so dark i couldnt tell if the glycerin fully setteled. It took the Glycerin a long time to settel at the bottem .. For 10 gal it takes it about 5--6 hrs to settel but the first batch i let it set for almost 10 before it would seperate and it wasent much. Also i noticed i have to mix the oil longer since it is darker..
