Towing a 33 ft Travel Trailer

I have lots of experience towing various trailers, but never a travel trailer over 24 ft. We are considering buying one in the range of 33 ft from tongue to bumper.

I am interested in hearing from others just what to expect when towing such a long trailer with my 04 Shorty 6.0 TD. From a combined hauling and towing weight perspective the truck will not be overloaded. And I will be using an Equalizer Hitch.

But I am wondering how different the handling etc might be from towing the 24 footer. Will the larger trailer pull the truck around, etc?

Will appreciate any comments from others who have experience with this senario.

I had the Equalizer Hitch on our 28 FT Travel trailer and it did great! You didn't mention the weight of the new camper but I would imagine that it is quite a bit heavier. I would look at an Air Bag kit from your rig as mine made a world of difference when towing our 5er and it should only help you as well. I got my air bags from pac brake and on board air from Air Lift and both are of the best quaility.

I don't use equalizer hitches or load leveling bars for the simple reason big gust of wind or you swerve to miss a deer guess Wat 9 times out of 10 ur truck will go over with camper! Wat brand is the trailer cause they set their axles diff? You will def no its back there that's for sure I always did when I used my shortbed for awhile. I just hauled a heartland northtrail a 31 box with tongue 35ft and it's dry weight was 6187lbs

You wont have any issues with the equalizer hitch, I used to pull our 32ft long coachemen with a half ton short wheel base dodge and even a few times with a Durango. The hitch really helps with wind gusts and semi trailers blowing passed you at 80. A longer trailer will probably handle better than a short one. It wont bob around as much and is easier to back up b/c they dont turn as squirrely. You have more than enough power to pull it, just make sure you have a good proportianal brake controller to help you stop.

you didn't say what type of sway control you are using. if none at all, even the friction bar type will sure help the tail wagging the dog syndrome, especially (as others above have said) when a semi comes by.

we went from a 28 footer to a 30 footer, which actually was more length change than it sounds, but the biggest difference I noticed was the weight

I tow a 35' gear box toy hauler. i run a sway bar and a load equalizer hitch and air bags, cause my bed is always loaded as well. it pulls great after i got the load distribution right. Hardly tell its there till you go to stop, which aint no thing if you have your brake controler set right. I pass the semi's they dont pass me.
