If I wanted major towing ability and decent fuel economy I'd look for a Cummins 12 valve between '94 and '98. You didn't mention whether this is a 4x4 and what transmission you have. You would probably have to update the transmission and maybe change rear gears. These engines tend to be the least complicated to hook up although there can be some areas where fitting it in gets a bit tight. That is a heck of a big six and it weighs about 1100 lbs. I've seen several installs with that engine on other forums that turned out very nice. You might want to look at some on 4bt swap. Several guys there have done chevy suburbans and pick ups. Takes a bit of work but can be done. You could alway go with a duramax but the electronics would definitely be more complicated.

Since you have the 12v that might be worth the rework on the burban. But if you can find a 4BT that might make your life easier. I know there is a guy with an 04 F250 crew cab that has a 4BT in it and he says he pulls a 10k lb trailer with it, he isn't passing many folks but it holds its own. 4btswaps has lots of info for chevy-cummins swaps. You can always do the 4bt and if you need more motor then switch out to the 12v (a 6bt and 4bt are the same block less 2 cyl.) and worry about changing the suspension and such then. You will allways be able to sell that 4bt later.

Good luck.
