Need help deciding what to do.

Hey guys I've been looking to do the cummins conversion and I've run upon a 01 or 02 engine for $2800 smackers for a complete engine with 70,000 miles on it or hold out and try to find a common rail engine? It will be going in a 02 f 350 dually probably use my 4r100 with it and have it redone at brains truck shop.

You should hold out for a Common Rail, or a 12 Valve. For 2800 you could get a 12 Valve, a Ford 6.6, or a DT360 IH and add power upgrades.

Thanks, that was what I was thinking and I also saw one of the other posts that was talking about engines with the # 53 cast on the block and that got me worried so I think thats what I will do and keep looking because I'm in no hurry.

im a little biased to a 12v but a CR is a good choice. though you have to figure in that the CR will cost A LOT more.

Stay away from a Ford 6.6. They suck IMO. A 24v wouldn't be bad. I doubt you will be able to find a CR for $2800 that is decent, especially with only 70,000 miles. You might, but I bet it will be engine only and no accessories or wiring or ecm. 12v's are nice, but so is the adjust ability of the 24v. Supply the VP correctly and regular maintenance and you could have a sweet ride.

Better do a little homework joe. Ford and New Holland built these for Med duty trucks in the mid 80s to 93. Most notable features are the "Ford" script on the valve cover, and the injector pump is on the right side. There was a 6.6 and a 7.8 used in that engine family(made in Brazil).

Thanks guys I appreciate your input. I havent seen the 01 or 02 engine yet. I was trying to do alittle home work before I went to look at it . Also if I were to put twins on would the twins clear up the fuel so I didnt get alot of smoke. Im pulling a fifth wheel camper and dont want to much smoke . It blacks up my passenger side fender pretty good now and some of it gets on the camper and the wifey doesnt like it too well. Ive wanted to do stacks but thats out of the question and then thought about side pipes.

These are a brazilion produced engine with a Ford scripted valve cover. I believe the Scorpian engines will be manufactured in the same plant in Brazil.

What do you have done to your truck now? As long as you don't go crazy on injectors and fuel system, tow twins should be able to clear up the smoke and make it an awesome tow/hauler.
