Cummins into '79 GMC C60?

I'm pretty sure it's a C50 or C60 or something similar. It's a single axle truck with a grain dump bed rated at 26,000 GVW. It currently has a 366 ci V8 in it backed up by a 5 speed with 2 speed axle. My dad and I were wondering if anyone heard of someone putting a 12 valve in one?

We have a couple with the same specs. Even with the two speed ours are geared a little slow for a diesel IMO. Ive seen several of them with 8.2 deitroits or 3208 cats(I dont like either). Ive never heard of a 5.9 in one, but I suppose it could be done.

94 Ford F-250, Reg cab, xlt, 12v cummins, 5 speed, 4:10s,
370's, edge jammer turbo, colt camshaft, tuned by Snap-on

99 Kenworth T800, C-12 cat power, 10 speed, 3:90 gears, ag200, ridewell tag, 24ft grain bed.

90 freightshaker, 3406a , 13 speed, um...it was cheap

You can do both the 5.9 or the 8.3 cummins.

I have seen one unit that was an 8.2 Detroit to 8.3 cummins swap.

And

One that was a 427 Chevy to 5.9 swap.

They used the 230hp n 660tq 12V-5.9 from a wrecked F650 n mated it to the ESO66-7B 7spd-OD manual trans n lock the 2spd rear in hi range.

Commercai l 5.9 specs.
190hp n 520tq.

210hp n 600tq.

230hp n 660tq.

the 8.3 they took motor 250hp 8.3L trans 5spd-DD manual n rear end 4.33 ratio from a wreck FL70 frieghtliner.

Now if you don't mind the work the 8.3 best way to go power wise.

Running the gasser running gear the 5.9 would be your only good option.

Thanks guys. What's the advantage to getting an industrial 5.9? As opposed to say a 1990 non-IC 12 valve out of a old Dodge D350? Any guess as to what the two ratios are in the axle? Would it be worth it to regear for this engine? Odds are it's going to be a 5.9, it's Dad's project not mine and it's not really for power so much as the 366 is using a lot of oil and has always drank a lot of gas. It's also a chance to have something unique.

Power the pickup 12V 5.9s :

160hp n 400tq.

175hp n 420tq.

215hp n 440 or 460tq.

Not to up on the pickup models myself...

Rear end ratios on the 2spd rear I'm not really sure.

7.17lo n 6.38hi.

Or

6.44lo n 5.29hi.

Some thing such as those...

Yeah, I know the stuff about the pickup models but I also know for example the exhaust manifold outlet is in a different direction on the industrial models then the automotive and whether or not I needed to take stuff like that into consideration.

I would for sure run a GSK-3K.

That will give you 3200-3300rpm which is enough to pull the gears yet not enough that a dink could blow it up if multiple drivers drive it.

What size tires this thing got ?

8.25-20 ?
9.00-20 ?
10.00-20 ?

Dayton spoke wheels ?

Budd wheels ?

10-20's. I'm not sure what you call them, but they are just the regular solid wheel with the 2 fist sized holes to access the inner dual valve stem. I was talking with my dad about this, and he said 3200 RPM was 60 mph in high gear high range.

Ok you got the wheels like a dually pickup only 2 holes not 4 or 5....

10-20 means its the bigger wheels with 10 lug nuts...

So your going to need an over drive trans

or

Move up to 11R24.5 tires.

You can leave the 20s on the front but you'll wanna get 2 radials...

Over n larger tires would be ideal.

Thread resurrection

I'm looking at a 1 ton 1980 4x4 van with 427.. Now, I know the cummins can be swapped into a ford 460 van.. But Iv never heard of one in a chevy van.

Will it fit without mods to the fire wall? Don't mind messing with the doghouse..

Thanks!
