Tires and Wheels

Alright Guys,

I was thinking it would be cool to put some aluminum wheels on our toyhauler, It has a 15x8 on there now with a 6 bolt hub. Its a Keystone RV with AL-KO axles. What should I look for?

Tires the size, 225 75 15, what should I look for as a ply rating the Maxxis Have a 6 8 and 10 ply rating. (I estimate the load at 10,500)
I also know that Michelin has some good trailer tires but cannot find them on their website.

For 225 75 15 inch wheels with that weight (I assume you the 10500 is the gross including pin weight weight) I would go 8 ply at minimum and not even consider the 6 ply. 6 ply has 2150 load capacity x4= 8600 lbs total. 8 ply has 2540lbs capacity x 4 = 10,160 lbs Take away pin weight you should be ok with 8 ply.

For the difference in the price from 8 to 10 ply, I'd just go with the 10's, no greif, no worry, just pullin' and enjoyin'

Still thinking about adding the new wheels.

looks a goodyear marathon 225-75-15 per tire rack's website they have a 2540 load rating. That is a total of 10160 for 4 Minus the pin weight it "should be ok" but I would like to step up to an E range tire. What brand do you guys run on your RVs? IF I step up to a 16in wheel the tire size would be 235 80 16 and is 2.5 in taller and less than a 1/2 in wider but ups the load rating to 3420 which would be 13680 for the 4. I like that weight idea better but now sure if will work.

You can go with a 16" alum rim and use a LT225 75 16 tire. Alot of 5er's and TT are doind this. It will raise the rv up about 1/2 in. You can use this http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html link to put in your current size then compare it with an alternate size. Tireandwheels.com has some good deals on rims.

When I put new tires on my travel trailer I was going to go Goodyear vs Carlisle. When I asked to look at them at discount tire both are made in China. Interesting that they put it in the bead area so if they are mounted you can't see it. As far as I am concerned made in china is made in china so I went Carlisle and saved the cost of a "premium" name molded on the side. Funny thing is they couldn't find my 5th tire so he just gave me a Goodyear marathon for the same price. I keep it as the spare. Mine are 215's but are 14 inch rims load c since it is only about 8k fully loaded.

This past summer I put new tires on my 5th wheel. Went with the BF Goodrich Commercial TA, 10 ply. 235/85-16 size, 3042 lbs/tire. It had 235/80-16 ST 10 ply, 3500lbs/tire rating before, made someplace in china. Even though the ST tires had a higher weight rating but its limited at 65 mph the TA has a 99 mph limit at its rating, but I never tow at 99.
Typically I am close to 12,000 lbs but the 5th wheel is rated at 13,000lbs. has about a 2500 lb pay load capacity. The data plate on trailer actually ccalls for 8 ply tires in the 235/80-16 tires. With pin weight I am not even close to tire limits only at around 24-2500 lbs/tire. But I feel much safer knowing they will handle the weight with a greater speed rating which means they can handle the heat better.

Checking out 5th wheel for up coming trip and I found this on my spare tire, never used it, had ZERO miles on it. Yea I know its old by time and its proof that you need to change old dated tires even if they are "new".

Glad I changed the tires earlier this summer. I guess I will buying a tire for the spare. Will not get the ST tires made in china. Will get another BF Goodrich Commercial, unless my dealer has a good used LT tire just to have a good spare.

Tires are going to have to happen in the spring.. With the new truck, the family has decided to go to Florida and camp on the beach. I will be stopping at a blue beacon on the way home to wash the salt off everything but I will have to find tires first.
