1st radiator replaced @ ~30k Miles by Champion Ford Katy under 3yr/36,000

I noticed a huge leak two days ago from the driver side of the radiator/truck. I decided to swing by a close dealer and see what they would do for me.

Of course the pressure test confirmed the obvious, both upper and lower hoses are leaking and the radiator is bad. They said there were no current TSB's on the 2008-10 F250's for this condition and I was going to be stuck paying them to replace the radiator and hoses.

The total, $2,803.XX

I told him to get bent and explain to me why the price was so high. $875 for the radiator, assuming $100.00 for the two hoses, and the service book claims 3.0hrs for the radiator removal and replacement (including pressure test and diagnosis if truck is drivable)

So, that means ~1800 bucks for labor... which I was informed was $150.00/hr (never knew it was THAT pricey these days... I guess I'm used to doing work myself)

That means roughly 12 hours for the install. They claim the extra hours is because I have a ranch hand bumper... BUT 9 extra hours?!??!?!? :soapbox

I worry my thermostat is hyper-extended and not sure why that wouldn't be a reason why they would warranty the work. Alas, if I'm stuck paying for it, I'll run this:

Which brings me to my next question, who all is running an aftermarket, all aluminum radiator?

Thanks,
Tyler

I was in the same position. My upper radiator hose was leaking at 40,000 mi. They replaced both hoses with the upgraded hoses and the radiator which they said they found a leak in. Charged me $2000 because it was out of the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. Went to war with Ford and found if the radiator hose is leaking they can code it that way and it is covered under the engine drivetrain warranty. Ford dealer wrote me a check for the $2000. I can look up the TSB # and repair code if your Ford dealer "cant" find it.

11-6-6?

Apparently top side hose was replaced with updated hose after first radiator repair. The bottom is still the original single O-ring style. Tommy Vaughn truck department still said it was on me.

Ughhh what a pita.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'll keep y'all updated.

If the ford radiator has failed twice I would be looking at a jober radiator.
I worked for a trucking outfit in Alberta, they had three LB9000 Ford trucks long hoods, the radiators would fail every 6 weeks they had three of them so every two weeks I changed on for new they are a terible truck , you have to assemble 6 parts to get three aligned then take off three to put the bolts in the first three. Junk engineering. Ford would not pay to upgrade the radiator, and niether would Byers, I was there for 3.5 years, they got changed all that time , stupid cheap junk.
If I was you I would call a truck dealership and ask who they use, and get one built by them to fit your truck.
Just a thought!

Found this on FTE.

For anyone that doesn't know Ford is now covering all 6.4 radiators for 5 years or 100000 miles which ever comes first. Per TSB 09-23-1 concerning repeat radiators leaks due to possible hyper extended thermostats. However, even if they don't replace the thermostats the radiators are still covered under this tsb because they use the thermostat basic part number as the part when submitting it for a warranty claim. And thermostats on these engines are covered by the diesel powertrain warranty. So for anyone who is trying to be boned by a dealer after 3/36 make sure to tell them to check this tsb. I have already fixed a couple this way.

Ford's radiator supplier is Visteon, GM has Delphi not sure about Chrysler. Modine makes alot of the big truck radiators along with AKG. An all aluminum welded radiator IMO (which isn't worth much) would trump a crimped model anyday. Plus it keeps me busy with those mentioned above. :D

The Mishimoto all aluminum radiator is getting very good reviews. Supposed to be a direct replacement. Also, you might check on the upgraded degas bottle which was also replaced at the time of my radiator & hoses. Also, what is the possibility the original radiator replacement did not conform to the TSB in effect at the time. The TSB my work was done under required replacement of both hoses, radiator, degas bottle and cap, even if they weren't leaking. My Dealer Service Manager was unaware of the TSB until I took him a copy showing the leaking radiator hose was covered and required replacement of all the above items. My work was covered under TSB 11-12-4 which superseded TSB 11-6-6, work code 8590. The newer design degas bottle has only one hose port on the front compared to two on the original, as well as a new cap. Hope this helps
