my truck has an open rearend, its aweful for traction, in the rain, snow or off road the truck barely moves. i want to upgrade to a posi but im not sure what to go with. limited slip, locker, trutrac? what do u guys use and what works? not to sound like a knuckle head but i like to burn tire every now and again so whats gonna handle 700ft lbs and lay down two stripes?
depends on how much money you want to spend... if it was me and i had the money i would go with either a e-track by detroit or an arb both are switchable lockers... both worth every penny this way if u dont want to have the locker on just turn it off
arb are expensive but worth EVERY PENNY and great that u can turn them off at the flip of a switch... u could also add a tank and some airhorns with it cuz uve allready got the pump
When I was researching lockers for the truck the e-lockers were new & they did make em, but they were not strong enough to deal with the power and abuse the PSD was able to produce.
After mutiple e-mail exchanges with Dick Cepek and other web forums I went with the Detroit Locker as the Detroit was even stronger than the ARB and less suceptiable to dammage or problems & was the only locker strong enough to take the power/torque that the PSD dished out.
However, that was back in 98-99 so I'm sure they have improved somewhat, but I still don't like the idea of the ARB or E-locker from a 100% reliabilaty standpoint where a Detroit will never fail unless the rear end goes PRANG:Thumbup:
i ran a arb in a jeep with 38" boggers and gears that wernt low enough for em every day never had one bit of a problem with them the arbs are strong as all get out id put one in and never second guess myself

Saw several jeeps have problems at the 99 EJS in Moab & one guy was so pissed he was going to switch over to a locker:shrug: When hard core off roaders don't like something, there has got to be a reason I'd say. ARB's were orginally designed for front end applications & not rear axles. In a front end you do not want a locker 24/7 and bad things will happen if you have one, thus the ARB was born.
It all depends on what you want & where you go wheeling. We go places that the only way you will get help is by sat com or somebody happens along. Otherwise you are on your own. I was something that is 100% reliable and bulletprof & not going to break down when out in the boonies.
With the ARB air leaks were a problem & are a potental problem area I don't want to dork with. We have a sun air II onboard air compressor & it's always had air leaks, never have been able to get rid of em all.
Just get a spool, I have detoirts front and rear in my Jeep, no problems now.
A arb should be fine, I don't see many people on the trails with problems if they were put in right.
well i tried welding the diff yesterday to see how id like a full locker, definitly a no no. do the detroit lockers make noise and do they come un locked when turning every time or do sometimes they stay locked up? any experiences with trutracs?
Well I have a lot of friends that have trail only rigs any they really like the ARBs, and ramp alot of pro rock crawlers have ARBs, and there are a few pro rock crawler buggies that are reged for street use, they may be illigal but so are most of the truck on this forum. Don't give me the Tv BS either I don't have one.
Oh on the detroit, if you let off the gas it will unlock if you get back in it it will lock. Like in my jeep its either coast thru the corner or keep on the gas thru, in a swb vehical when it locks or unlock it throws you a bit.
ok so a definit no on a locker. i think im gonna go with the trutrac, not sure how it works but it doesnt seem like i can wear out like most LSDs.
