Now this a thread I'm making were I practically invite someone to "flame"
my statements.

But I don't understand how, why..........................Someone does not put this Transmission behind there Cummins. The hardware is all there! No special adapters to make to bolt it up to the ISB. I just don't understand why everyone isn't doing this. I have a MT 653 that is waiting for me to gain some money. I don't understand why Dodge/Cummins owners aren't looking in to this. The transmission used don't have a bad price tag. Someone just please tell me why this isn't done more before I super glue one onto my Cummins.

I personally think it would be a wiring and computer nightmare to make it all work. Maybe I am all wet, but I would think it would take lots of time.
I dont think so.....we have MT653's in our '87 Terra-Gator....there is no electronics for them. It would be the ultimate setup for pulling, converter lockup in 2nd....They are slow shifting though...need a little improvement if you were wanting to go fast. Mounting the transfer case for 4x4 would be the biggest problem prolly.

Ya the lack of eletronics is the reason why I think it'd work so good.

As for the truck electronics. I know I would not have Speedo, or cruise control. I think I would have the Check engine light on the whole time too, the linkage and mounting would be wierd but diffently possible. Drive shaft modications need to be done. But nothing is saying it's impossible yet...........
That's really what I'm looking at, something that says it's impossible then
I'd have to lift the truck to fit it however.

I don't like doing the impossible

but,

If it can be done, I'm doing it.

I also don't have 4WD, making the install alittle easier.:woot:

Sounds like a winner of a trans for the truck we want to drop a cummins into, when we get a little funding and time. We're aiming at putting at 12v in a 59ford 2.5ton truck and making it into a puller. How much are these trannies running, and is it an overdrive trans.

As far as 4x4 goes, we'd just do a divorce mount.

I got one in my work truck. They do shift real slow, compared to what you're used to. The Alli shop that adjusted mine said there's a bunch of adjustments you can make in the valve body. They lowered the shift point by 200 rpm so it would shift a little faster, and not hang out at 3100 rpm waiting for the next gear to drop in. Correct, there's no electronics in it, but it does have a lockup(most lock only in 4th & 5th). The 1st gear is a super low, like low range in a transfer case and is only used when the selector is in (1). Otherwise, regular driving uses 2-5. It is not an overdrive unit, and has a "stated" max input of 640 pounds of torque & 250hp. I'm quite sure I'm about 100 past that, & it's lived for about 30k miles like that. As with a 47RE, if you can get a better converter, it may be able to take more. Also look in the specs here: http://www.atlanticdda.com/transmissions/mt653series_specification_sheet.cfm
It's 602 pounds dry.

This is why I love this site.

I emailed Trans Exchange in Portland, OR to see if they know of anything that can be done about the shifting. Then asked if there's other things to do internally to raise the max torque rating. The only shift kits they list are for an Alli 1000, 2000, and 2400 series. The MD3060's we have in other trucks shift a whole lot better, plus have a higher power rating. The downside is the electronics that run it. It's a double overdrive 6 speed though.

I was under the impression that the MD3060's had more like a stand alone electonics system. Something that operated separately from the the engine controls. I swear that I read somewhere that as long as you had the electronics then you could run it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
