24 Volt wiring question on my Truck

OK guys, here we go, I need to put a 24 volt (yes 24) plug in the bed of my truck. I know I can "pull" off the dual batteries to do this. Now my question is, if I do this will it have any adverse affect on the truck?? It will be hard wired in as it is not comming out. Also, want to be able to idle the truck to supply power and keep the batteries charged.

So will it work??

Hey.. I need to run an accessory off of 24 volts.. I'd be interested in this too... I may go to radio shack because, if you have questions... LOL

Don't know if this will help or not, but I'll put it out there for you.

Big rigs used to have a series of four or more six volt batteries, they would series two six volts for twelve volts, then parallel two sets of the seriesed six volt to make twenty four volts for starting. Back in the day we had two twelve volt batteries on our tow trucks then would parallel then for twentyfour volt jump starts, we occasionally blew out a few dome lights.

I think you could do the series/parallel switch with the PTO idle up mod and you should be just fine.

The only adverse effect I would see is possible shorter life of batteries and alternators.

the other option is have separted 24 volt battery system and seprated 24 volt alternator to work with this because this way it will not mess around with 12 volt system .

Belive me it is kinda pain in butt with series/ parallel switch set up and it not always work right [ this is common with older large rigs with 12/24 system ] but newer one now useally are straght 12 volts because it is easier to get 12 volt parts than 24 volt parts.

i know there is quite few motorcoach did have straght 24 volt system there but a very rare to see in truck have straght 24 volt expment miltary truck always 24 volters.

my old gmc truck i have before [retired ] i did rewired for straght 24 volt kinda tricky to get the gauages to work on 24 system otherwise not too bad if you know where to find 24 volts bulbs :poke:

Merci , Marc

I have the dual altenator from the factory and though of putting two more batteries in the bed and using the second altenator to keep them powered up.

This system would only be used once or twice a month. Its just when we go out to use them it is not practical to take a battery charger, generator, fuel, etc. And them have the down time of waiting for them to charge.

I sure as hell don't want to screw anything up on my truck.
