This is a start, if indeed it's just like a 3208. It wont get much more hp than you already have. Good idea to have a pyrometer to make sure it doesnt get too hot. Next time you're on my side of the Alimont, swing by and we can tinker.
I am surprised a NA 1160 went as high as 225, a turbo 3208 is normally only 250, I would leave it alone and just drive it.

I was going to also mention, without a turbo, it may just puke out black smoke & not make any more power....if turned up.
Wasn't there an 1145 and 1140 prior to the 1150?

i got this info off a plate on the motor it says reman by cat. engine modol 1160 bore 4.5 stroke5.0 serial#57v24683 ar.no.r760/9l7633 ref ser. no. 9589055 feul setting .055 idle 3030 full load 2800 horsepower 225 thats what it says?
1160

it never let me down and started every morn w 1 push of the button. i put over 350 miles a day on that old 10 wheeler and never let me down. unfortunately about 50 more horses would have been perfect i gotta let the truck go though to fix my freight. anyone interested? 1969 ford ln8000 w 225 cat and allison auto?
I was at a local hillbilly diesel shop today and I remembered out in the yard had sat an old 1160 in the rain for years, sure enough, still there, and right on the valve cover was 225 HP. So I can vouch for it too. I don't know what year it is or why it is in the yard, but it has one yellow valve cover and one blue, the engine is painted yellow, and it looks like a lot of parts have been replaced, but as I said it has been sitting there in the yard for at least 5 years so I doubt it is any good now.

I think alot of reman 1160's got replaced with 3208's. We've got a CAT reman 1160 in our IH dumptruck and it's just a 3208 w/1160 sticker on the valve cover. V-pump and 225hp rating same as the Cat reman in the feed truck. Ironicly the origonal owners manual lists the 1160 at 225hp... also lists the 671 Detroit at 250hp though.
how much you looking to get and what's the over all condition of the truck. any pics of it?

If it's the same as a 3208, this is a good start. It won't gain much more horsepower than you now have. A pyrometer is a good idea to make sure it doesn't become too hot. Come over to my side of the Alimont next time you're passing by.

Mine is puking out black smoke at an elevation of 6,000ft. I don't believe it was at sea level. I believe it is an air aspirated engine. Does anyone no of a way to adjust the air intake to stop it from smoking?
