Ok guys, I'm a true ford man at heart but I'm torn between a Duramax or a 7.3 powerstroke. I will be purchasing a truck in 2-3 months and I'm looking for a reliable daily driver, easy maintance, tow the toys and won't blow up with moderate modifications. Anybody here with experience in both of these engines? Ford seems to be tougher but I could be wrong. Any opinions?

Best bet is to test drive the trucks you are looking for and go from there. It's all about what makes you happy.

7.3 Is tried and true. Extra reliable but just doesn't make power as easy as the d-max or cummins it seems. Personally i'll take a 7.3 anyday.

I'd go Chevy,and leave it alone or do a very mild 40-50hp towing tune. If you want a 7.3 to pull with a stock duramax,you will need a 60hp tune miniumum,and your at the trans limit,for a Dmax with a tow tune,you will need at least a 100hp tune.The auto trans will burn up with 100hp tune,and EGts willstart to be a problem,if you dont so other mods.The Ford trans is much weaker than the allison to start with.As much as I like the 7.3 PSD,it isnt trouble free,my buddy has a few of them,and one is always in the shop.Things he;s had to do with less than 50K miles are oil pans(rotted), exhaust leaks on 2 trucks,in multiple spots, injector seals,starter motors,glow plugs and controllers,oil leaks from turbo lines,cam sensor in one truck,and the 7.3s tend to use oil ,he is always dumping rotella in the them between the oil leaks,and burning it.
If you find a nice Ford for a good enough deal to do the full trans up to handle more Hp,and have a few extra dollars for other mods,it may be the way to go.I just think you will get more bang and reliability for your buck with a duramax/allison combo.

Even the early 300HP stock DMAX/Ally 5 speed makes a 7.3L/4R100 look like a slug.

The Ally and the 11.5" locking rear are much stronger. They're more like medium duty components. The GM 11.5" locker is actually the same size as Ford's F-350 DRW chassis Dana 80 rear. It's also the same size as the rear used by Ford in the early F-450's up until '00 model.

The rear is a true locker that mechanically locks up and has no clutch packs to wear out. The Ford rear is a limited slip that will eventually quit working altogether.

The 4 speed 4R100 and the 10.5" Sterling l/s rear in the Ford are light duty truck components only. You won't find them in M/D applications.

Ford's front axle is stronger than GM's, but not enough to make a big difference unless you're a hard core off roader or frequent snowplower.

As far as moderate mods, the GM will handle more because the trans can take more and there's tons of different mods to chose from. As far as maintenance, the GM takes 4 less quarts of oil at oil changes and the trans should last a lot longer.

Front end maintenance could be more in the long run on the GM because of IFS, but my Fords went thru ball joints like crazy and the uppers get spendy.

The GM has a better quality ride, too.

iv never owned a dmax.so of corse im gonna say go for the 7.3.but i do know the dmax aint a bad moter

The 5spd manual in the ford wouldnt be too bad but the allison is much better then the ford auto. the 7.3 heui injection system can be screwy to work on. Id go w/the d max

I have a 7.3 with a 5 speed and I love my truck, no problems at all with my 7.3 with 185,000 miles on it.

On the other hand, my cousin has a Dmax, he beats the crap out of it, and its still together.

I would say take them both for a test drive, and see wich one you like the most.

my truck sees alot of drunkin nights like tonight and it always gets me home.theres a small dent under the foot pedal though.

owned 96 powerstroke......pos.....yes 230k......over 3k too replace injectors... then trans went....got rid of for a cummins.....love the cummins....300hp/600lbs tq @ rearwhells...dodnt have to worry if the p.o.s is going to start when cold
