Hi, I have a 04 ford F350 6.0 liter diesel truck with the 5R110 transmission. I have never had any slipping, jerking or anything going on with the trans. It has always shifted smooth. This last weekend we towed our camper out to our land. It was pretty muddy and had to put the truck into 4 wheel low just to get up the hill and even then it was hard to get to the top. After we reached the top i tried to reverse to put the camper in the spot we wanted it in and it wouldn't go into reverse. We dropped the camper and headed home. The truck ran fine on the way home shifting smooth in drive all the way home. But when I got home I put the rear up on stands and started trying it in park, reverse, drive and so on. Now here is what is happening. It seems like its stuck into drive, it will continue to drive and shift smooth no matter what gear your in even neutral. Except for park and reverse. When in reverse it acts like it wants to go both reverse and forward. I dropped the pan and found no metal filings but a little normal clay like material on the magnet. The trans fluid didn't smell burnt or discolored. Also it doesn't show any codes nor does any check engine lights come on. I have the temp gauge not the dummy light and it never showed the trans even getting close to getting hot. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my trans? is there a bad solenoid causing this, is this an easy fix or am I in trouble and need to rebuild? Please help!

I'm wondering if the transfer case is stuck in a weird position.

Did you try running through 4wd hi+lo range again, and try reverse while 4wd is engaged?

If you have a ScanGaugeII, you could see what gear the transm is actually in through the GER X-gauge command.

Also make sure the selector cable on left side of the transm is actually engaging the lever into reverse.

found the proublem

I broke down and bought the book on rebuilding that tranny. after tearing it apart when i got to the forward clutch assembly it was completely burnt. The splines inside were heated up so hot that they were warped and stuck to the clutch housing. It just seemed weird since the truck would shift so smooth up and down while in drive. If I can get my camera to work I will take some photos of it and post to show just how bad they are. As bad as they are I was amazed that the truck got us home and even more amazed on how smooth the tranny shifted while on the highway hitting 80 miles an hour. I did not know that you could burn part of the tranny up that bad and still be able to drive it at the speeds we did to get home.

Thanks for the update!

You say your no mechanic, but it sure seems like your one to me. Good job!

I assume you mean the inner clutch friction disc alignment splines are overheated+warped. If you have any hard parts damage, then it will get expensive, if it's just clutch packs and seals, then it won't be so bad.

Pic's would be great to see.

Thanks, and yes I believe the book calls them the friction discs and as far as I can tell so far it only appears that they are the only damage to the trans. I am working on getting the photos, I know that everyone is going to want to see this so I will upload as soon as I can.

Here are some photos, I don't know if anyone can open and see them. I can't seem to figure out why they won't load properly and just show the photos. But here they are and hopefully people can get them open. If anyone can tell me what to do to get them to show I would really appreciate it. Thanks. So you know I went to attachment and attached each photo separately and this is how they show after I did it.
