I have a 94 7.3 idi turbo diesel with stock exhaust that when its under back pressure from the engine, like when coming down a hill and let off accelerator or get back on it will have a smoke cloud coming out the exhaust. It is not burning any oil. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what might be the problem? Thanks

Using an engine for breaking should not produce a lot of smoke. The first time I read this, it did not click. When an engine is used for engine breaking it can draw oil past worn valve seals. On a gas engine it is visible on the first start of the day, and in many cases is visible while coming to a stop while coast against the engine. If the engine has a worn oil control ring it will smoke under acceleration. Some of these symptoms will be masked on a diesel because they smoke anyway, but smoke while decelerating against engine compression may not be normal. Is it a real smoke cloud?
