The block heater is an option and whether you need it or not it is really dependant on where you live. As for myself, I live in the north east where and winter temperatures rarely dip below 20deg F and the glow plugs work out just fine. For extreme cold conditions though I would definately recommend it. All it does is warm the block just enough so it doesn't absorb as much heat from the combustion chamber as it would if it were ice cold.
I put one in just for *****s & giggles since it was so cheap. You can pick up an OEM block heater and cord for around 120 bananas and it will only take you about 15 minutes to install it.
