So after I got down with my oil change. I realized that when I raised the idle, like way high, all the to around redline. I had a misfire and I was burning oil (blue smoke). Where would you guys be pointing to after knowing this, VP44 or injectors or internal engine damage????????????????

I do have 2 codes PO216 and PO1693 if I remember right.

p0216 is the classic sign of a dying vp44.:cry: :sorrysign:

yeah, p1693 means that there is a fault code dectected, doesn't mean anything specific. p0216 is I believe Injection pump timing error. That code is a bad one.

why does it miss and blow out blue smoke then?
I see where your coming from I've heard that before but would a bad VP44 make the engine start belching out blue smoke? I could see it causing a miss. But it only does pretty good about burning oil as long as I keep the RPM's under 2,700.

Yeah, the blue smoke is a mystery to me. I know a light white smoke is unburned fuel. In which case I would say your injection pump timing was off and on one cylinder it wasn't spraying at the right time, therefore not burning the fuel. But blue smoke is oil smoke. I doubt that your rings are bad this early, but you could check your crankcase for blow-by. If you have a significant amount of blow-by, you could be getting oil back into the combustion chamber.

still sounds too soon to have rings going out. Does your truck spend an excessive amount of time idling. Because milage isn't always the best indicator of hours on the motor. But blue smoke sounds like oil to me.

Excessive fuel will cause blue smoke...dad's did the same thing with a cracked manifold...

I would suspect the VP44 is overfueling slightly...

I let it idle for a few minutes before I take off and a few minutes before I shut down. I also let it idle when at the bank/grocer store/ dounut shop/gun store/ porn shop/ etc. I've heard of rings failing prematurely because of excessive idle. I always asssumed excessive idle ment hours at a time. So I don't know really, fill me in...... Thanks.

It doesn't blow out any smoke when I put it under a load at RPM's lower than 2,250 RPM (area) I'm pretty sure blue smoke is always a sign of oil burning.

Yeah excessive idling IMO is idling the truck for hours at a time. Say you're stuck in the snow going over the pass or something and idle the truck for 8hours, or you run a plow and the truck sees a lot of time sitting and idling, what you're doing doesn't sound excessive to me.

That other bit of information about not doing it under load sheds some possible light though. My friends 12v and my old 12v both had turned up pumps and injectors would blow some whitish light light grey smoke when revved under no load. Both times that cleared up as soon as the timing was adjusted.

I think the color may mostly depend on who is watching, 10 people can come up with 10 names for a color but all see the same thing. Not saying that what you're seeing isn't actually blue, but given the circumstances and that pump code, I would bet money that it is a timing failure.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But I think its probably new pump time. Take it to a reputable shop and have them check it out.

nah don't be sorry, I'll replace whatever needs to be replace. I just don't want to replace the fuel system just to have the same problem. I actually didn't see any color, I'm color blind !!! so I can't. My buddy said it looked blue. but it could have been the lights too. It doesn't seem to be doing it anymore though since I started using Marvel Mystery oil, i heard that is really good for the VP44. So who knows.

If it's cleared up and the truck is running fine, I would let it be. I wouldn't be too surprised if there were some complications in your future though. Good Luck and hope for the best.

if this helps any i drove my truck with the p0216 code for around a year before i replace the pump. i just got tired of died pedal. i would drive it until you had more than just blue smoke and a code.when you start having something like very little to no power one min to normal power the next, you know its getting close to the end for your pump.

I drove about 300 miles in the last 2 days and still nothing. I wonder if it's going away because of the Marvel crap or the ULSD I'm running. It sucks I started using both at the same time. So I have no clue, it was really bad for a few months and now it's gone all the sudden, no dead pedal, no misfire nothing anymore. If the VP44 dies, it dies, I'll replace it. But I'm getting nothing but pure diesel power now.

I drove mine for about 6 months b4 I replaced the pump, but blue smoke sucks!!! Stick with the BLACK!
