I have a and 08 F350 PS to pull a 12K trailer. What is your thoughts on a bumper -v- a gooseneck? Which is better? Whcih is safer? I am a newbie looking for some good advise from the old pros. Please offer your opinion. Thanks
Are you talking about a utility trailer or an RV? If uti;ity I would recommend going with the gooseneck and get the B&W turnover ball hitch. It is one of the best on the market. If you are talking about an RV then I would recommend the 5th wheel hitch and again go with the B&W turnover ball with the companion hitch. Very very nice. I have towed all three styles and I prefer the 5th wheel/gooseneck style over the conventional style. Much better control and manuverability. IMHO.
It all comes down to what you want and need it for. If you want to run a topper, or a hitch in the bed is a problem for you, then bumper hitchis your option. It is more sensitive to where the load sits, and cross winds will mess with you more, but there are the advantages of having the bed clear, and a smaller trailer. Otherwise, I would go with goose/fifth, just because the load dispersement to the truck is way better, the way the unit trails is better, and the backing characteristics are much more civil to deal with. Bumper hitch can be a real PITA sometimes to back.
I agree with everything said above, BUT if you need to keep your bed open for tools, you'll need a bumper pull. Also, if a shorter trailer fits better in your garage or yard, then a bumper pull will save a little space. A 12K gooseneck trailer is also a heavier trailer than a 12K bumper-pull, so load capacity is diminished. The ideal spot for a gooseneck is when you get into the 14-16 range. At that weight, you're beyond what you can pull off the bumper.
All that said, if I was just hauling equipment for customers and I didn't need to carry anything in my pickup bed, or if I was pulling an RV, I'd go with a 5th wheel.
"Safety" is a relative thing. If you properly set up a BP, they pull like an arrow. I like goosenecks better because they're more forgiving - you can be a little light on the pickup, a little heavy on the pickup, be loaded too far back, too far forward, to heavy all-around, etc. and they still pull really nice. When I'm out in the middle of nowhere and need to get something moved, I can load a gooseneck to where it squats the pickup a little and be good to go for miles & miles w/no problems. BP's need to be balanced well, have the WD bars adjusted properly, the tires on the pickup at the correct pressures within a couple lbs., etc to pull that nice - a tough thing to do if you don't run it across a scale, and that just isn't possible in a lot of instances. But as was said above, there's a lot of cases where you just can't have one. I still have a BP stock trailer and a BP car trailer that I use very often, just because I can still use the bed. That, and pretty much EVERYTHING bigger than a small car has enough tow rating to safely (notice I didn't say legally) pull a car hauler assuming you don't have much of a load on it, so you can get a job done with whatever tow vehicle is handy. (riding lawn mowers, boxes of stuff, overlength, bulky, etc. which seems to be 90% of what you actually use a 20,000# rated gooseneck for. LOL )
That's very true - 12K is pretty close to the top end of what you can do with a bumper pull, and you're gonna be on the very edge of what you can do with a "normal" hitch. There won't be much room for error if you stay on a bumper hitch, without some fairly spendy upgrades - about the same money as a gooseneck ball.
