Cummins in an Excursion

well i'm contemplating putting a cummins in the gasser Excursion i have.and haven't really seen anyone to do this conversion or read anywhere about this as the truck is a 5.4L V8 i have read to use destroked for parts and to stay away from fordcummins, but have no idea why?

also what Cummins motor is best to use. the 12v, 24v or the CommonRail? as to what years aswell should i look out for?

as far as what trans is getting used it will be the stock ford trans that is already in the truck as it was just rebuilt/upgraded.

any help or links to places with some info would be greatly appreciated as i'm debating doing the swap or just trading the truck in and getting one with a diesel in it as i have found a few i liked but am having thoughts as i haved owned my excursion since new so i know what i am dealing with and not someone elses headache or ****box

Where are you located? Are planning on doing all the work yourself?
i'm located in illinois and yeah i was planning on doing the work myself along with the help of my two buddies
what year ex? and what tranny came with the 5.4l?
sounds like a worthy swap.
I've been thinking about this swap if I ever buy a Ford.

A 12-Valve would be the most simple. JPscustoms runs one in his. I run a 24-Valve and it's simple as there is little wiring to worry about. There are a few guys on here that Common-Rails and they have awesome rigs. EB.Bldr and Robts both have CRs.

The transmission in the Ex now will determine whether or not you want to use it. Most will recommend just switching to a 48RE. I'm putting an Allison in my Chevy.

Destroked makes great parts.

the excursion i have is a 2003. just did a quick search an the 5.4 came with the 4speed (4R100) from ford as the 5speed wasn't an option unless you got the diesel or if it was a later model excursion after 2003. hence the reason i am thinking this because it would be cheaper to do the swap then try and find a diesel excursion as i need a family SUV that is capable of pulling a trailer

i'm having a little bit of a hard time trying to find a 12-valve but have found alot of 24-valves that i can get for a very good price. as far as transmission goes, i just had it rebuilt as the torque convertor and valvebody went out and had the trans gone through and rebuilt/upgraded with better parts so i'm not worried about that, if it blows its still under warranty and i'll just have them rebuild it again.

this is more or less a budget swap because if the swap is going to cost me more then finding/buying a diesel excursion i will just be trading it in and buying an excursion that has a diesel already in it from the factory.

24s are usually cheaper. People do not think the VP44 is a good choice. If you keep it fueled it can run for a long time. I'm pushing 134K on mine.

A new motor plate for the 4R100, flex plate and proper Torque Converter could have you in business on that end. Destroked carries a kit for that as well as the starter for their plate.

The intercooler and a few others parts from a diesel Ex or F-250/350 will have to be found as well.
Someone on DTR did that, put a 5.9L CR in an Excursion. Came out pretty nice I must say. Here's the link: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/ford-excursion-cummins-swap-hpcr-48re-t176490.html
that sounds sweet I wouldn't trade my diesel ex for nothing.
ok i have a chance to pickup a 12valve cummins cheap and what things should i look out for. one i found is from a 95 2500 truck. anything i should do aftermarket wise if i did grab it and once i had to pulled out of the truck besides like headstuds?
see if the KDP has been tabbed.

aftermarket-wise, the possibilities are endless for a 12v. headstuds arent needed either unless you are going to turn it up quite a bit.
