My nob is under the dash right below the stearing wheel and plastic cover that pops off. There is a steel bottom edge at the bottom of that cover that already has holes in it. This keeps the dash clean and unsuspecting folks from seeing the knob and knowing your truck is chipped. Also keeps someone from borrowing the truck and being tempted to play.
No, there's about 2 feet, but on the older chips I bet you could lengthen the wires and go as far as you want... The ribbon cable DP use's should be avalable at Radio Shack, but I dont know how that new chip would react to it...
If you have it set up with a no start setting or just want it hidden and relatively easy to access i would mount it under the fuse panel cover pointing down, if that makes sense. If you weren't looking for it you wouldn't see it
