He everybody. This is for those of you who have replaced the stock cluch/fan w/ an electric system. Tell me all your stories. Everything from wiring schematics, things you'd do differant, do you regret switching, HP gain, MPG gain,...... etc.

I have wanted to change for about a year now, but haven't made the time to research it until now. I like the Flex-A-Lite system, but it's pretty pricey. Using a mid 90's Aerostar in more along my price line, but the low CFM's concern me. I live in SE Texas and it get's around 110 degs here in the summer. More on the freeway w/ all the concrete reflecting it up at you. I normally don't pull anything. THis is my daily driver and is empty most of the time.

So bring on all the advice you can give.:popcorn:

there are plenty of guys running the aerostar/taurus 2 speed fan. The high power on that fan puts out lots of air. They are very popular in the rockcrawling community cooling 350's & 302's making lots of power running obscene gear reduction which puts them going nowhere fast with 100+:1 gear reduction ratios. You don't hear of guys overheating thier motors with those fans wheeling in the desert southwest.

On SDD, & TDS Joat has experimented with no fan at all and noted that in 80° weather he only sees the temps climb up after extended time periods of idle and stop & go traffic, If moving 35 or higher no cooling problems exist in an unloded state. The downside to no fan is that A/C efficency is lost b/c no cooling to the condenser.

I did some measuring with the taurus fan I had and figured that with some custom brackets I could mount 2 fans and would without a doubt have plenty of airflow to cool the engine.

I've been running my twin Ele fans now for 3 years. I put a Temp probe on the radiator and it's set for 180 degrees. It's come on about 4 times in the 3 years. It's a good mod to do. I think I still have some pics in my sig somewhere. I put each fan on its own switch because I mounted the Pass side on right over my tranny cooler so if I needed to cool the tranny down I can just turn the pass side one on.
I do not have A/C in my truck (old POS XL, lol) so wiring it up to my A/C was not a concern. I bought the largest twin fan setup I could fine at the parts store, temp probe, 2 relays and 2 switches for 210 bucks and once you take that 40lb monster fan off you will be glad you did.

BJS, This is the first time I've seen info refering to crawlers. Good stuff.

I'm mostly worried about the Aerostar/Taurus fans not moving enough air. But w/ the newfound info you posted, it doesn't sound like much of a concern.

Alaskan, I've seen the info from Joat. Good stuff. But I didn't know what kind of temp he sees during the hot parts of the year. I thought about running w/ no fan while it was cold here. But it regularly gets to 85+ during the winter here, so I didn't want to risk it.

Ya'll have eased y mind on the homemade version. I think I'll try and schedule a trip to the j-yard to look around.

Anyone else have anything to add?

I have had the same concerns about doing the swap. It seems there should be a mpg increase along with power. Here's what i found out about the size of the van fans and shroud: The whole assembly is 30" wide or 34.5" if you count the mounting tabs, 18" tall and 6" deep. The individual fans are 15" and 13.5"
My op. is they should work in a hot climate even though they were designed to cool a V6 van engine. Our grilles have more airflow than a van. In an obs there is room also for a pusher fan in front. That would give you the option of 3-4 fans.

Hmm... I neve thought about putting both pullers and pushers in there. I might look into backing this system up w/ an auxiliary fuse panel.

Glad to see ya. You can have a much more fun over here with your sig and comments. You can say boobs :roflmao: without it being deleted.

I actually squeezed 2 14" fans in front as pushers just for the tranny cooler. It's overkill. When i try the swap, I'll take 1 out and have 1 upfront on a switch for traffic jams. Sometimes i pull a goose and bulldozer and weight 24,999 GVW. That's the driving conditions i had in mind with 2 pushers upfront.

The biggest problem the crawlers have with the taurus fans is that they are a 2 speed fan you have to get the one from a 3.8L taurus when running the higher speed the continuous running amps is around 45-50 so ensuring you run it through a relay and one that can handle the power is very important. The standard over there is a golf cart relay which are rather expensive and I figured this might be a good application for the stock glow plug relays since they can be had relatively cheaply.

I think I might know where to look for a wiring schematic that has relays incorporated into it. Good thinking about the GP relays. I'm thinking I'd like to either wire it up where one fan is on a temp sensor, and the other one come on w/ the A/C. I'd like to be able to run one off a switch. Come to think of it, I guess it would be redundant to run one on a switch and one from a sensor. All the sensor is.... is an automatic switch. with my luck I'd forget to watch the temps and not turn it on.

I'm starting to get anxious to do this. I might be going to the j-yard sooner than later.

GPSD, Your right about that. I find myself spending more time here than there.:blah:

I run my pusher fans off a hayden adjustable fan controller. Controls 2 fans, with a 25 amp fuse inline. Probe goes in between the radiator flues. I just put them on a toggle switch in the cab so i can turn them off in winter. That won't work with the Taurus fans being they draw so much.

i am going to get at this as well this weekend. can someone post part numbers for the relays, temp probe, anything else.

so the temp probe goes in the coolant or just in between the fins??

The add on fan relay comes with a probe--it just pushes between the fins. There's 2 of them--one that's adjustable, and 1 that's fixed to come on @ a preset temp like 180 degrees. Look here: www.haydenauto.com

Pep Boys stocks them here and Napa can get them.

or a old starter solenoid from a older model ford truck might work, i know some folks who run big lights on them

THis is getting good. So let me ask this. If I were to put together a shopping list opf what I needed, what would it be?

When I get the Taurus/Aerostar fans from the j-yard or from e-bay, what all do they need to have. Will the shroud do any good, or is it not needed in our application? Do I need any of the taurus selonoids, sensors, shroud, etc... Am I leaving anything out?

Let's start a list of items for myself and others to use.

While not a V8 Diesel my VW has an electric fan. When I bought it the previous owner had it on a toggle switch as the original system quit (wiring hack job). I didn't like the idea of trying to remember to watch the guage so I went to Advance Auto Parts. I picked up the Hayden preset Cooling Fan Switch. Icomes on at 185 and goes off at 165. It has the Probe that inserts into the fins to measure the temperature. I wired everything according to the destructions and waalaa. I have had no issues and it works great. I am impressed how cool these VW's run (even with the pump turned up). I really liked the setup. I know there is an adjustable, but I really didn't want to mess with it as this is a beater. I will tell you that that fan moves some air let me tell you. When it somes on you can feel a lot of air moving, however it does draw some power to run. The windstar fan shroud is suppose to be a good fit for an obs radiator. If it fits both the 95 brass and later aluminum is another ?

I called my local j-yard and asked them about electric fans. He said they had a big pile of fans I could go thru to see if I could find what I need. They've got both singles and dual fan assemblies w/ & w/out shrouds. He said $35 for my pick of the pile. Is that a good price for a junk yard fan?

Yeah i think so. Seen some on ebay for like $30-40 and they looked rusty like they been in road salt or sat out in the weather. By the time you pay shipping your in for at least $50. There's new ones on there for about $125.
