my buddy for some reason when he starts his truck has no heat for an extended period and then all of a sudden it will start building heat to around 260 then drops down and settles at around 180 but he has to run it with no coolant in the tank other wise it pukes it out the over flow bottle....i just checked for exhaust gas in the coolant and it came back positive so what would the next steps be to make sure we arent throwing money away

Its blown....just did gaskets on mine. No need to be in denial about it, typical LLY. Get some ARP's and the "C" grade gaskets and slap her back together.

Yep my 05 did the exact same thing. Tried to get the dealer to fix it under warranty they said they wouldnt be able to tell me for sure if warranty would cover it until they got it apart and if they determined that it wasnt a warranty issue there would be a $1500 bill for the teardown and $5000 if i had them put it back together. So i traded it in. And have pretty much kicked myself every day for not just fixing it and putting some studs in it.
