my current PCM code is KNY1 for my 06 6.0...I haven't had it at the dealer since i bought it...I am waiting on my SCT to be delivered by dfuser with the ecomo/tow, street, and race tunes. If, down the road, I take it to the dealership for whatever and they flash it - will my tunes work? How will I know what flash (if any) they put on it? Like in the earlier thread about DJ's Mother of god tune someone mentioned the 06e17 flash...how do you they know this was the flash they got - is it read thru the Xcal2 or is it on the paperwork from the stealership?

sorry if this is a stupid ?

The reflashes are done by Ford. When Ford finds a glitch, they put together a fix and reflash the truck with the cure. Reflashes are specific to the year and PCM code. The 06E17 reflash is only for certain 2003-2004. Being that you are a 2006, you would not get that reflash but we have a variety of tunes for your truck from economy conscious power to the looniest of loonies. Just tell us what you want to get out of your truck.

Thanks,
Vivian

Re-flashing the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) can be a variety of things. To explain as best that I can....

The vehicle's PCM has a "base program", much like you PC (Windows). There are many different versions of this base program (Windows), like 06E17 (Win95, 98, XP) etc.

Some software (tunes, etc) will work on multiple base program versions (Win98/XP), most however, will not. When you "upgrade" the base software on the PCM (PC/Laptop), some old functions no longer work.

With SCT tuners, as long as you keep the same "base program" (Win98, or XP for example), the tuner will still work. If, during the reflash, the base program is updated (like from Win98 to XP) the tuner will cease to function.

Many times the "reflash" is nothing more than a minor software update that changes some feature or function in the base software (like a Windows security patch). These do not affect the base program compatability at all.

Does that help?

Does this mean that you have to get a new chip?

this is for a 6.0, not a 7.3

Wouldn't it be the same concept?

It works the same on ALL Ford PCMs, no matter if they are in a Escort, Town Car, or King Ranch - Gas or Diesel.

In some cases your original tunes will work after a reflash. In some cases they won't. It all depends on what Ford changed.

Correct.

If the reflash replaced the basic program (Operating system), then it will not work. If they simply updated the existing OS, it will work.

Could you not then just purchase some updated tunes? Or do you have to buy a new SCT?

Yes, it is my understanding that most, if not all, SCT dealers will gladly burn a new program for the new PCM software. This is for the SAME VIN# ONLY. Also, there may be a nominal charge for this service. One reason many people with good tuning will NOT let the stealerships touch their trucks - they *may* (actually are likely to) get a PCM update any time it is worked on.

You do not need to buy a new SCT. I believe some tuners will sell you updated tunes if you have been reflashed.

We sell you the SCT Xcal2 with unlimited tuning. If you get reflashed all you need to do is send us your new strategy and we will send you all the tunes you want at no charge.

You are correct. The tech gets paid for reflashing the computer. If you do not wish to get reflashed, it is your prerogative but you must let your tech know that you do not want it.

So then these new reflashes that now cycle the injectors, are these changes to the whole operating system or just an update?
