Looking at buying a used 2001 2500 Cummins 4x4. Truck looks super clean and only has 44,000 miles. 2 owner truck. Motor looks immaculate. What should be some things to look out for? Any ways to tell if it was wrecked w/ front end damage of motor repairs? Nothing was reported on carfax or autocheck. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Check
the fuel prssure and take an oil sample if you can. The lift pumps that supply the injection pump on these truck are very prone to die which leads to a injection pump failure and they aren't cheap.

How can I check the fuel pressure? I am driving about 4 1/2 hours away to look at the truck?

If you get this before you leave, you can attach a pressure gauge to the shrader valve on the inlet to the injection pump. Then you can see what its like at idle and if you have someone that can watch it for you, you can put your foot on the brake and put it in drive, then run it up a little bit to put some load on the system and see if that draws it down at all. If you can't check it before you buy it, have it checked when you get back if you do buy it, or install a gauge or low pressure light. Its important.

Anyways sounds like a pretty sweet truck.

FYI if you buy that, with how low the miles are...... You won't be doing good on fuel mileage. Low mileage engines don't seem to do good on fuel. My redone didn't start doing until 150,000.

I appreciate all the replies guys! I drove out to look at the truck yesterday. Overall it was a pretty nice truck. It ran excellent and shifted good. Steering was a little sloppy and alignment was off some. Tires had been rotated and one of them that was on the front was pretty worn down on the outside edge. The driver side bed panel had been replaced and the work wasn't the best. The truck had what appeared to be a blow by or overpressure tube that ran off the front of the motor down to a canister located between the fan and the motor. I had a '96 12 valve but I don't remember seeing this on that truck. Anyway, seemed like the canister was overflowing and oil or something was on the steering box and the steering components under the truck. Do these need to be emptied regularly/ is it a sign of too much oil added? I was not able to check the fuel pressure though. Truck might need front rotors turned. Interior is flawless. There was a little fluid at the bellhousing. Also has a new paint job. Anyhow, final analysis:

2001 2500 extra cab 4x4 long bed
CUMMINS
SLT, gray, gray cloth interior, 4:10, auto
44,000 miles
the man is asking $20,300

Needs:(that I know of)
Tires
Rotors turned or new
Alignment
Steering issue addressed

BUY OR WAIT FOR ANOTHER?:shrug:

Also, truck threw a p0500 code. Something about a speed sensor. Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks!

As for the bottle it known to drip and drool all over the engine... It extreme offroading it will run oil out the front of the engine...

As for the outer edges being worn thats toe-in... Need to be adjusted...

Steering box has a sector adjustment on it so you can tighten up the slop in it...

Thanks for the help Mopar1973Man! What about the P0500 code? Is this something to be concerned about? Also, with the 4.10 gears, I think the truck might be skipping 1st gear on take-off. I still have some time to decide whether I want the truck or not. Could you live with knowing that the truck had some poor body work done when they re-welded the bed panel back on?

i bought my 2001 last year. when i was looking at it the guy said he changed fuel filters at 7500 miles and also about the lift pumps going bad. it had 56000 on it then. it has 68500 now and i just checked the pump preasure and it is too low. i need to do something about it right away. its at 9 at idle. mine also had oil all over the front of the engine. after i got the truck i found out that you have to drain that over flow bottle every oil change. the guy did his own oil changes and never drained it. it was half full.

P0500 is a speed sensor error Error code here...

But P0500 error code is common when your spin your tires. Because the rear tires are spining but the front ABS sensors don'e see a signal so the error is produced. Just have it cleared...

Auto Transmission work is expensive on the Cummins this might be something to look into... Most guys here have to dump $3k to $5K in to getting a good trans that will hold the power...

4.10 gears are great for towing but as for a daily driver it going to bring down your MPGs and you'll have to cruise much slower to get you MPG numbers up...

Body work... I think here is the lightest problem of them alll... I would check around on the transmission problem too...

Why don't you just get rid of the bottle... Not required... Either extend the hose straight down... Or try my idea it will clean up the mess for sure...
