will a stock 7.3 t/c and trans hold up to without modding?
and if you just did say a shift kit and/ or a converter how much would that hold till you need fully built everything?

and THEN how much power will the motor hold without major mods?

:sofa :thanks:

Stock, not much won't hold with a tuner for very long, converter will give up the ghost at 280rwhp after a bit. With a converter and valve body probably roll along with another 50hp for a while.

Motor seems to depend on rods, with factory forged should be good for 450 with studs and the pmr's seem to have about a 400hp limit.

My 97 tranny isn't real happy with 326 hp. Stock converter, and shift kit. Rods are good to 500 hp.

thanks everybody! gotta lot of 7.3 buddies that ask me ?s like that, and not as familiar with them...

so basically stock will hold around 300 hp
aftermarket t/c and shift kit 350 hp
350+ needs built trans and t/c
and 400+ need to start modding the motor internals...

hey 99...hows much smoke does the 140/smoke roll coal? big cloud then clean up or constant haze? gotta buddy bout to order a DP tuner and he wants some black smoke!

the stock tranny can take a lot the converter just sucks at transfering the power when its unlocked, the lockup is pretty harsh due to the large drop in rpms from unlocked to lockup. my cousins truck runs 14.4 with propane and a chip, stock trans handled the power very well when the converter was lockd up, no slipping at all, hes prob around 380rwhp. his pump crapped out so hes going to an ATS

It depends on your driving as well. If your pulling a 20k load all the time it will go a lot faster then commuting or if every start has the skinny pedal on the floor. Dont try boosted launches etc.

exactly. the stock converter is so loose anyway that there is no possible way to hurt the trans on a boosted launch cause the things un locked till part way threw 2nd, its more likely to slip when its lockd because there is more power going threw it and no "cushion" if you will of a unlocked sloppy TC. the only thing i can see is killing the fluid faster, loose converter + staging is 4wd = hot fluid, but if ur not a meat head and only stage for a couple seconds while waiting for the tree to drop ur ok.
