Just bought a 1995 E350, 300k miles, newly rebuilt engine. Starts and runs great but granted, I'm new to diesels.
I've noticed on the highway when I accelerate then let off, the engine noise is dead quiet almost like it shut off. It doesnt of course, and its still responsive if I accelerate again, but
"normal" idling sound only comes back when the engine drops below 1000 rpm. I cant imagine this is normal but everything else seems perfectly fine when driving.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sound fine most diesels would run 0 to hardly any fuel on decel. So there is no “load” on the engine.

That sound is normal for these engines -- the injectors do turn completely off during a slow down as you describe
