i would like to know what is common for these motors to get before rebuild. what do you have on yours? how far have you heard them going? i'm about to buy a 96 4x4 with about 450hp and 900lbs torque and it has never been torn down and it has 414,000 miles on it. just changes the oil and never has any trouble with it. is this common? should i worry? buying for $5,500 and has TONS of work done to the truck alone and tranny and front-end. want to know everyones thoughts. thanks in advance.:smoke

I got 214,000 miles on mine and still runs good but I think it all depends on how well you take care of it in the beginning.

I've heard of many going over a million. I would consider 500,000 when it enters the back of my mind. It really depends on how the truck was used, and how it was maintained.

163,000 on mine and going strong

Just fix the oil leaks - gaskets, seals whatever... with the engine not marking its spot the oil consumption is more that 1 qt in 1k miles I would think about it. By the time it is up to 1 qt in 700 miles I would be saving hard or looking for another engine. Right now it is 212k and a qt in 2k but it leaves a teaspoonful when it is shut down - from the rear seal. S I would guess that it is burning a qt in 2.5 - 3k miles.

I saw a real nice '93, shinny paint and no dings, windshield was even shinny - showed 893k on the clock with Kentucky plates. Did not look like a repaint, other than the tires it looked new.

I've heard of some millions but I think they were designed for 500,000. Mine goes great with 151,000 and my friend with 398,000 goes pretty well too.

mine is 450 off of 280k, got it with 263k about 13 months ago. runs great, i keep her maintained as best as possible, and i figure i will do more in depth work on the engine when i can finally afford to add more power, though for now my main thing is just making sure the engine is happy and yeah, shes good to go.

oh, and i run the hell outta the truck.

500,000 and it's about time for a rebuild. But they can go quite abit past that if driven nicely so drive it till it breaks and then rebuild or replace! You know where you are just start saving and have fun!

Consider doing oil samples once a year. It might be about due for a valve job, but I wouldn't worry too much about the rest of it.

220K on mine and no rebuild.....no real problems either. My alternator quit charging the other day so i whacked it with my warm-up throttle stick like it was a pinata and it has been fine.....I got a rebuild kit from Geno's coming but it has been fine for 4 days now.

i've been hearing just about the same thing everywhere i check. apparently these go a long time. not too uncommon to see close to a million! i have a lot of faith in these things, guess i have to to buy one with 414,000 miles. lol. all is good and will post pics once i get it. it's a beast! :smoke

Another thing I've noticed is it's always the camper haulers goin cross country that make it the farthest. I read in Farm Show Mag that a 96 12v 5 speed made it 1,200,000 miles. He was a camper hauler. All he did to it was some sort of intake, strait pipe, gauges, and slid his stock plate forward. Couple of clutches, another set of stock size injectors, LP, and a fuel line was all he had to replace.

My 98 12v also has 214,000 miles. Runs great!

I've read somewhere that Cummins claims these engines are good for 650,000 miles before a major overhaul is needed. Can anyone verify this from Cummins ????

Yep...500K is the realm of rebuild as far as I have been told.....but regular maintence plays a huge role in that too.
