Ya he said it started to clear up but he has never seen it smoke like that before. I was on the phone with him when he told me this. He said if he revs it up it usually clears up but when he did it this morning it didnt clear up. His truck smokes a little when fired up in the morning when cold but nothing like this. Im sure it cleared up all the way or he would have called me but I will try to get a hold of him and ask him.

Got a hold of him and he said it cleared up once it got warm.

could be several things could have a fuel pressure issue like fuel draining back when sitting .. could have some weak glow plugs not properly preheating the cylinders could be a set of injectors starting to scuff and performing poorly till warmed up and could be ICP pressure issues poor ipr oil draining back when sitting ect ect

fuel drain back is when the fuel drains back into the tank while sitting generally caused by some form of a leak in the system that essentially is like taking your finger off the end of a straw to let eh water fall out.

when this happens the first start after the fuel system is full of air and thus causes low fuel pressure and white smoke until the air clears out.

any leaks in the fuel return side can cause this or on the supply side to the lift pump.

as for fuel pressure issues anything that causes low fuel pressure can cause whitish grey smoke such as a restriction in the supply to the pump a poor working regulater or air introduction into the system

He said it starts really good and its been -20* or colder for a few days, he cant plug his truck in because the cord is broke and hasnt made to town to get new one (lives 50 miles out of town). He says that is runs pretty rough for few minutes and than smooths out. He says that it may be missing but not sure. It has never done this until he ran ULSD for the first time. Is there any thing that he can do to check things to find the problem?

If it runs rough for a few minutes, then smooths out then it has to be a glow plug issue. The LSD possibly made this more noticable but I really dont think that is the issue. Check out the GPR and the wiring for the glow plugs. More than likely that is where the problem lies.

-20 and he can't plug it in!?!?!? And he wonders why it smokes, coughs and sputters? :damnit

Try to cycle the glow plugs a couple of times before starting it the first time. Turn the key on without starting the truck and leave it on for two minutes. Turn the key off. Repeat. Start the truck and see if that helps.

If it doesn't, then he can tackle the GPR and plugs in that crazy weather.

Me, I think I'd just get a kerosene shop heater and blow on the front of the truck for about an hour before I replaced GPR and plugs in that kind of cold.

Then again, I'd probably just curl up by the woodstove and read a book and forget the truck until the world around me thawed out. LOL

Ok just to clarify it starts great, just like its 60* out, just runs rough like maybe its missing a little but not really bad. he cycles his GPs two to three times when its that cold and its not plugged in. But the smoke doesnt stop until its warmed up and and he drives for a little ways. this is not a growing problem things were fine one morning and the next this. GPR was replaced the summer before last.
