This morning as I was waiting for my mechanic to finish working on the wifes mini-van...we got to talking about his tow-truck. Its a '96 F-Superduty with the 7.3L. He told me that the IDM in his truck went bad and that he could only replace it with one from a 96-98 MY truck.

I told him that if he could find any IDM from 96-2003 MY trucks with a 7.3L that he could interchange them. We then got into a heated discussion about this to where he called the Ford dealer, spoke to the parts guy, and confirmed that NO...you can't. I told him that of course the dealer would say that. I know of guys here that have OBS trucks that are running IDM's from the SD style of trucks.

I then told him that there were no '98 MY Superduty's made. They went from 97...to releasing the redesigned SD as a 99 MY truck in January 98. Again...I was told that I was wrong. He went to his parts lookup program...and found that there are part numbers for a 98 7.3L diesel F250. I told him is software program was messed up...that again there were no 98 Superduty's made. They were released in 98...but advertised as 99MY trucks. I was told that for 1/2 of the 98MY...the 7.3L came in the OBS style...then in June sent to the SD style. I told him that my build date was 5/98 on my 99...to which he replied build date yes...but it wasn't released before the June crossover date. Grrrr...

So...what concrete proof can I take back to him that shows that 1...there is no 98MY 7.3L Superduty or OBS truck...and that they went from 97MY to 99MY....and 2...that he can run an SD IDM in his 96 without issue.

Thanks

When it comes to gas mechanics...this guy is top notch. Diesel is his weak point...thats WHY my truck never sees the inside of his shop unless its getting new tires. LOL

your right Dave......ANY year IDM will work in a 7.3. When mine went years ago in my 95, I put one from a 97 or 99 in and it still works perfect......

tell him you talk to people every day who actually do things with their trucks, not blindly trust what a computer tells them to say.

There is no frickin 98 super duty, the only 98 PSD was in a van
Any model year IDM will work in any model PSD and I can assure of that.

PERIOD!

Have a nice day!

There were build date's in 98 for SD's, but they were still sold as 99's. Just like there are 07 build dates for the 6.4 trucks but they are all 08's. Have the guy call Ford and ask if they show ANY F250-350's for MY98, they won't.

Dave, have him check this out. I copy and pasted from Wikipedia.

Ford took the aero styling to its conclusion for 1997 with an extremely round nose on the new F-series. The regular F-250 (light duty) was basically an F-150 with the same body panels but with heavy duty axles and suspension, along with odd 7 lug wheels. The F-250 HD (Heavy Duty) was considered in the same series as the F-350. With the arrival of the all new "Super Duty" series in early 1998, but labeled the 1999 model, the standard F-250 ('light duty'), F-250HD (Heavy Duty), & F-350 line was totally dropped and the F-250 (light duty) was offered as the "7700" package for the F-150 (noted on the tailgate emblem).
Here's the link if you want it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F_Series#Tenth_generation_.281997.E2.80.932003.2F2004.29

And if that isn't enough to sway him our way here are a couple links from edmunds.com

http://www.edmunds.com/ford/f350superduty/review.html F-350 Superduty reviews

http://www.edmunds.com/ford/f350/review.html F-350 pre-SD

I used F350 just for the fact of not having the light duty F-250's mixed in there from 97 to 99.

Maybe that is where he is getting part numbers for 98 F-250's?????

Here's a link to the only 98 MODEL YEAR truck that Ford made that was heavier duty than a F-150 http://www.edmunds.com/ford/f250/1998/index.html
