All major oil companies are now in the field testing stages of a new classification of diesel rated motor oils set to debut by the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017.

The Proposed Catagory-11 (PC-11) oils will be split into two classifications, one for low viscosity oils on newer diesels that are approved for low viscosity oils like 5w-30 or 0w-30, and one for traditional viscosity oils that are backwards compatible with older engines. Our current CJ-4 rated oils will be going away and the new traditional viscosity classification will likely be called CK-4 rated oils but nothing is in stone yet. Not sure what they will call the low viscosity only oils.

The main purpose of these new oils is to improve fuel economy, improve oil aeration, improve shear stability. Theses traits, especially the "aeration" and "shear stability" could be a good thing for our HEUI injected PowerStroke engines with traditional viscosity oils like 5w-40 or 10w-30 or 15w-40.

Much information about this can be found on virtually all the major oil company websites.
