I'm looking into getting an 88 F-250 with a 7.3 IDI automatic. The truck is in immaculant condition and I'm getting a sweet deal. I've seen and heard of the "Black Mamba" diesel engines and thinking about dropping one in. Before I tackle the beast I was wondering just how much work it would be to drop in a Powerstroke in swap for a IDI.

It would be lots and lots of wiring. Don't get me wrong it can be done but why do it when you say your looking at getting an IDI in great shape? If you want a PSD it would be a lot easier to just find a truck with a PSD in it already. The IDI motor is a great mechanical motor, still its not a PSD but still a good motor.

You would need the entire wiring harness out of a PSD truck along with all the extras, like the alternator, starter and what not. Nothing IDI related will swap to the PSD, the IDI is all mechanical and the PSD is all electrical.

If you are set on doing the IDI to PSD swap id have an entire truck next to the 88 your getting to swap parts off since your going to need more than just the motor.

as for the extra parts, the Black Mamba is a turn key. Now the wiring harnesses, I have access to two PSD trucks but they're wrecked. Electrical connectors are easy but I guess my main concerns are the a/c lines, engine/transmission mounts and if I would need a new drive shaft to match the tranny?

Ya you would need the transmission from a psd also. The drive shaft you could go try to get one to match the length you need or go out and get one cut to the right length. I'm sure the air conditioner lines you can get fabricated to match up.

I've had an IDI before and loved it but never a PSD...I like both but you can just do more with a PSD. I've driven them and they can get pretty mean.
