I know that GM has been doing this since 2006, so it's nothing new. In a GM the ECM stores the last 10 flash codes that have been put into the ECM, so if there has been flash's done then the number won't match what GM shows. PLUS the code for the flash will be different unless it is a genuine GM flash, and GM has the flash history for your truck on file to compare it to. And for those who put in a different ECM to keep from being traced, the TCM logs torque input and TAPS to calculate how much HP has been going through the trans(this is why GM went with a newer TCM for the 6 speeds). And to top it all off, the BCM keeps track of how much fuel has been used which also helps them to keep track of things. AND several modules now in the track keep track of the milage, so if one doesn't match they know something has been tampered with. Was talking to my bro which is a manager at a Chev dealer. They had a conference with reps and were told last year that by 2012 Ford Chev and Dodge were all going to be traceable if the truck was tuned. This will affect trade, resale and obviously warranty. But like you guys said there is a lot of smart people out there and I am sure some one will figure it out.
So if GM has had this technology since mid way of 05, I don't see why the other 2 don't have it by now or have it planned real soon. As for locking the module, if there is a demand for tuning, then somebody will find a way to crack it so it can be tuned.
