I am purchasing an 01 with 6 speed trans. The owner just put a power puck on and I am concerned about torque to trans. The info I have found shows the engine puts out 245 HP and 505 ft # torque. The trans info I have found says the tranny is rated for 550 ft # torque. The power puck claims 50 HP and 150 ft # increase. I am buying this to pull a 30 ft travel trailer and don't want to rip something out, should I remove the power puck for towing or will the trans handle this type of power. I am no hot rodder but when pulling in mts. I would be concerned.

First, congrats on the new truck!

You should be fine with the Power Puck. It may be a little nicer to tow with as well. The main thing to do is get some guages first and foremost! That is THE most important thing you can do after you jump in your new truck. The guages will give you valuble information otherwise not know, and can potentially save you from big hassles by anticipating problems before they become a total disaster.

Thanks, now for the gauges, pyro, boost, fuel pressure maybe? The truck has a new (2 months ago) lift pump and ip. Anything else I should get?

If it is an HO, which it is if it it puts out 245, then the trans should be able to handle just about anything you can throw at it. You might burn up the clutch if you get to much power. I think that's why the trans is only rated to 550lbs. I have over 260,000 miles on my truck and it makes around 400hp and 900ft/lbs. I only replaced the clutch once around 60,000 miles. No other problems.

those numbers are also to flywheel real world stock numbers will be 10-20 percent less

You will only need to worry about the clutch. The NV5600 is a strong tranny. I ahve towed with mine at 1000Tq at the wheels and have had no issues with the tranny. About 125K miles on it now.

The one thing that will get you into trouble while towing with lots of power is staying in OD for extended perionds while using the power to get over hills. You power level will be no problem though.

Use what you have and you will be ok.

What he said^^^

Most people believe the NV5600 is the strongest tranny offered in a Dodge Cummins. And with a High Output engine in the 2001-2002 it's pretty hard to make power that will challenge that transmission.

Phily 911 is right... The 6 speed trans is pretty tough. I would worry much about it... Now if you had a AUTO... I would be sweating bullets about it...:hehe

The overall input torque probably isn't the main thing that kills the trans. Shock load (dropping the clutch) and lots of power together breaks stuff.
