I have a 1999 super duty auto 4x4. The trans slips in all gears. full of fluid and it is dark brown and smells burnt. The trans slips worse in 1 and 2. When it shifts into fourth and lock up it holds the best but still slips. My question is what is the main problems I will be faced with in the trans. I am going to try the rebuild my self and would just like to hear from some people that are familiar with this trans. I would also like get some input on the updates for these trans. and what brand and where I should get the parts. thanks seth

Just for the hell of it you can try changing the fluid and filter... When I bought my Bronco the fluid was almost black, smelt horrible, and wouldn't shift into O/D. That was 5 years ago when I changed the fluid and filter and Im still on the same tranny now, no slippage.

I agree. Change the fluid and filter and see where you get. Its a lot chaeper than swaping out the tranny without really knowing for sure.

If you are looking to rebuild yourself.
Racerx is the way to go. You get support as well.
