I was driving my buddy's '03 max and had to pull it into 1st gear to get out of a wet yard pulling a trailer. When I got out on the street I went to shift it into drive and nothing. You can move the shift lever all the way from top (park) though its range down to the bottom (1st) but the tranny does not change gears. We manually put the tranny into drive by crawling under and moving the selector and it seems to be working fine like that.

Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Seems to me that the NBSU switch was the problem. I think the Alli's up through 2003 had the old switch, which was prone to failure. IIRC, it was something about water intrusion corroding the guts.

Check the cable. Have someone move the shifter ( engine off ) while someone else under truck watches movement.
