What syptoms did yall get when you VP44 died? Hard start? Hard start when warm? dead pedal? Or did it just die? :damnit


I have had a hard start for the past 3 weeks and I have NO idea what's causing it. I've checked my Vulcan lines and fittings and everything is fine. Also I've checked my injector lines and return line and all is good.

Also it won't crank on the first try. I have to bump the starter and let the Holley run and then I have to keep the key turned for about 6-8 seconds before it finally starts. Although it will crank on the frist try if the truck has been runing, but it can only let it sit up for about 20 minutes anything longer than that and I have to bump the starter.:poke:

Some say that my diaphram in my VP44 has been ruptured. Do yall have any clue as to what is going on?:shrug:

I had hard starting and a soft pedal. I also threw a p0216 code a couple of times. I'm still able to drive but decided to go ahead and replace it instead of getting left on the side of the road.

It almost sounds like you have an air leak in your system somewhere. How is your lp doing for pressure?

Dead pedal, No problem starting, At idle Could hold the throttle to the floor and it would missed like crazy and also pour White Smoke. I also threw the p0216 code with 2 other codes.(Cant remember them).

It almost sounds like you have an air leak in your system somewhere. How is your lp doing for pressure?
My FP is at 14-15 at idle and never goes below 12 at WOT and that's with the Comp on 4x5. My Holley is leaking a little bit, but it always has. :shrug:

Edit: I'm running my Holley as a stand alone pump.

That's not good news. If you have eliminated air in the system I would have to say it's the pump. My hard starts were when the truck was warm. I would have to let the fuel pressure drop back to "0" and then the truck would start. If there was any pressure on the system the truck would have to crank for 5 or 6 seconds before it would catch. Did you try to pull any codes?

Well I tried to pull some codes when it first started, but I didn't get anything. I'm going to run up to advance auto and have them run it again.

to me that sounds like you are getting air in your lines. The metering diaphram will make it hard to crank when warm if there is any pressure on the diaphram. Thats what happened to mine I installed an oil pressure switch, problem solved. I would check all of your return lines, even a pin hole leak that isn't leaking fuel could be getting air in the lines causing it to get choked up. That is where I would start.

I will make a third vote for air. You are losing prime and getting air in the lines when it builds pressure back up. Every VP I have seen that has gone out the hard starts were when hot. They would all start reasonably well when cold. Not saying it can't be bad, but your symptoms are leading away from a bad pump.

I had no problems starting but just had dead pedal and threw the p0216 code...didn't find it was bad til a week after i bought my truck:damnit but luckily local shop replaced it was warranty work even though i had already the wire tapped for my comp:Thumbup:..saved me quite a few dollars

I looked over my return line, but it's hard to see a pin hole and I can't hardly see the dern thing in the engine bay cause there is so much going on under the hood, but from what I could see it looked fine. The only thing I can think is that the line on top of my tank could have rusted. My Vulcan draw straw will be here on wednesday or thursday so will see what I find when I drop the tank.

Anybody know how much a new return line is? Has any made a custom one yet?

Edit: I checked for codes and nothing was to be found.
