I am considering changing to a 5.9 cummins with a 5 speed overdrive.
Would it be better to use the older m5od transmission or the newer trany such as the one in my powerstroke and which one would connedt to my older transfer case?

If you aren't going wild on power the ZF5 is a good one to use. Your transfer case will almost certainly bolt up. I wouldn't try to use the m5od, I don't think they have a big enough bellhousing. Even if it would fit it is a much lighter duty case than the ZF.
