I know this has been chewed over many times, but lets get the best of the aftermarket intakes a shootout (bench shootout anyways!).
Wondering about:
1. Overall filter performance:
The AFE and Banks has a 7 layer system whle the SB has 8 layers. The Airaid has five but has a special layer thats supposed to be even better. The AEM Brute Force and new AFE dry filters are supposed to be even better but I have no proof of any of this except manufacturers claims. A test done by Spicer a few years back claimed ALL the aftermarket companies could not filter nearly as good as stock, or even keep up in air flow and partcile holding capacity. The closest one was AFE PG7 (ahead of the Amsoil mind you) but still not even a comparison. I could put a link up for anyone that hasn't read this. It makes me put no trust into any of the aftermarket.
2. HP performance:
So any of these actually cause any noticeable increase on a stock-type engine. I've bought three AFEs already and notice nothing but more noise (which I like).
3. EGT drop:
On a well designed system I could see this happening, possibly on the AFE stage 2 or 3, but not much else (even with the AFE).
4. MPG:
Only time I saw any MPG gain was minute on my 05 Dodge CUmmins with the AFE, and that dropped off quickly once the filter started to get clogged after 5000 kms.
5. Fit:
Every single AFE I have ever bought fits like its out of a cracker jack box. How do the others compare?
Basically I want to get out of AFE, they have been terrible for me. Boots coming off and cracking, ill-fitting parts, and no oil issues have caused me great grief not to mention the way over the top prices they want.
I am most interested in a dry filter right now, such as the AEM or new AFE. Anyone have these yet? USe them offroad?
