My friend just got a late '06 Quad-cab shortbed with the 5.9 ofcourse, auto 4x4. He's saving up to get a full turbo back exhaust but for now he wants to get a delete pipe to give it a little better sound untill then. I think he should get a muffler delete and keep the cat for the dealer but I think removing it might help more for performance and EGT's.

What do you think?

Iam having my stacks installed tomorrow with no Cat or muffler, from what Ive been told you cant beat the sound of a Cummins uncorked.

But I worry about the drone. Its his daily driver and the family ride in it everyday. I too love the straight piped sound but the drone will get ya. But maybe w/ the quad cab you won't hear it.

I got rid of my muffler, but still have the cat in mine and it sounds real good outside and you can barely hear it inside when u have the windows up and air on. I'm happy with it.

If it has a resonator on it, then leave that and lose the rest, other wise remove both, and add a SM Muffler(Still has the same deep cummins sound but elimintes the Drone between 2100-2400 rpm's)

I get alot of cab noise from mine and if I'm riding in back the deep tone can get to ya after awhile. If he's not a dihard then leave the CAT but if he wants it to wake up the town cut it out. also the cheapest delete is a 4' hunk of pipe and a 4' hunk of flex one standard clamp and 2 strap style which all can be had at NAPA for around a 100 bucks.

Loaded with a trailer and driving 2200 miles like to drve me more nuts than I already am...... At times I could not even hear the radio, it just reverberated the sound into mush. I wore ear plugs for most of the trip LOL

I removed the cat/muffler and the sound is GREAT! There is a slight drone but nothing that I cant live with. Geno's makes a muffler delete pipe for under 90.00 shipped then all you need is a piece of 4 inch pipe and some band clamps.

What the hell is this drone I hear everyone complaining about. I'm not sure I know what you guys are talking about with this "Drone" Can someone please explain....
A very obnoxios deep buzz that distorts sound waves and even light waves. It's hard to explain

I got my muff delete from genosgarage and my cat delete from DPPI. This thing is real loud. Its loud without the muff but when you get rid of the cat you will wake up the neighborhood. With getting rid of the cat you will drop the EGT's about 300 degrees. I noticed a big diffrence on EGT's with pulling this trailer up hills. Now I want a little quiter so Im going to add a strait through muff but yet keep the flow.

I got 5 in straight pipe and have never ran into something obnoxious. I do like it loud. But I guess I'll have to pay more attention for something bothersome when I'm driving.

question is how does all this affect back pressure on a stock or mildly altered rig , that is the primary reason i haven't cut out the muffler yet

Oh Trust me, if you put a good load on it and run 2200 - 2400 RPM's and it will rattle your gray matter, at lest it will on mine... I have an ATS muffler that I use to split my twin tail pipes, and it does nothing to stop the drone, so I going to put in a resonator to see if that help. Don't get me wrong I do not want to lose the low loud grumble, I just want the harmonic Drone to be gone....

It helps to keep the EGT's down but not as much as getting rid of the cat. getting rid of the muffler will make louder and cooler but if you get rid of the cat too the egt's will drop big time and be super loud. Mine is so loud now I want quiet it down a bit and get rid of the droan. After pulling this trailer from Utah to Washington and back and listening to it for 15 hours each direction was enough to drive you batty.

today I took the muffler out and add it a 5" tip to it, it sounds good and looks great. When I hit 60000k I will change to a strait 5" system, if it wasn't for the warranty I could have new stuff every week. This is the best truck I ever own.

06 mega :smoke

Yeah i pull a 12000 pound tractor every day im ready to stuff some towels or somethin in it buy quitin time. It gets old but im a die hard and believe in lettin the cummins breathe cause i give hell! Dont know what i would do with a muffler. i guess keep it for souvineer of what i used to have.
