There is also something to do with the nostalgia of keeping a truck original, you can also look at the fact that if someone is still running a truck that is old enough to have a 1693 in it on the road they probably dont care about mileage.

Its the cool factor of having the engine that started the legend of caterpillar truck engines still in good working order running in tip top shape, ask anyone that has ran or still runs one if they would like to have it back.

There is also something called OCD ...obsessive compulsive disorder where all engines must be restored and maintained in their orignal vehicles in perpetuity, socks paired and neatly folded in their own sock draawer. It's treatable.

1693s are white elephants and pollute our air. They were replaced by improved technology for many reasons which together represent progress. My two cents. :rock

Until you update to an electronic engine than your current engine is a dinosaur just the same.

Funny how it took the engine builders 10-15yrs to get their head designs back to the level of technology that was on the 1693.

Why the hell are you talking about OCD for?

Add ADHD to OCD and you have an engine mechanic (and yes my socks are perfect in order of wear pattern and cuff strength) :knight

I don't WANT to see the list of disorders required for those of us that wrench and truck:help

1693's are better motors than what replaced them which was the 3406A the 1693 was a torque monster that did not know what a hill was. It is probably one of the most legendary motors to ever grace the frame rails of a truck! I have heard many stories on these motors and all say the same they pulled anything and lasted a long time if tooken care of but they did get 3 MPG but when diesel was 47 cents nobody really cared about that!

lmaoo!!!

My 1693 gets better fuel mileage (4.103 avg. last month) than my 06 acert (3.628 avg.) and it pulls 10 to 16 thousand # per load more weight at 13 mph faster in the hills. Average weights grossing 105,000 to 120,000. Far as I'm concerned the 6nz was the last good engine cat built. So until the economy picks up or my old "rattler" gives up on me ill keep right on spanking my "Mr.clean" acert with the rattler. And just so "Mr.clean" don't get lost along the way ill leave him a haze trail to follow. Seems to me a engine that's suppose to be burning all it fuel should be getting at least as good of mileage as a 37 year old pre cup engine. Oh yeah and it starts when the temp drops below zero. Wish my acert did that, on second thought maybe I don't its saving me money sitting at home as i pull yet another load with the rattler.
Maybe its time to work out a direct injection and p pump for the old girl. Then with my fuel savings I could cut back to only working 8 hours a day.
