DT530 runs rough idle

I have a DT 530, we did complete overhaul in nov, new inj. as well, now truck came in kncking and blowing black smoke, we pulled exhaust man started it, found #4 smoking bad, replaced #4 inj. now still has a little miss and engine sound like it wants to come appart at idle, as soon as you raise it off idle or load up the eng noise goes away, I suspect faulty inj. I have a scanner comming in in the morning so i can do a cut out test, any sugestions?

Yep, bore scope thru the injector hole. If you don't have one, leak down, or at least pressure test the hole. Too new for over-fuel, and prolly smoked the liner. Higher the r's, lower the millisecond burn rate, hence less noticable miss. It will eat itself if the liner etched. Sorry...T

yep that does make a lot of sense, hadnt thought of that, I am expecting a loaner scan tool in the morning, will read codes, do cut out etc. then might have to go deeper, only issue this is a garbage packer, and its thawing out now so we want it out asap!, thanks for the info, great to see you back

well its not so bad for me, I have one of my apprentices doin the grunt of the work, but it sucks for everyone in the shop though!

Anyhow I beleive we found the issue of no power/noise at idle/engine runnig rough, when I went to drive it back in the thing wouldnt budge at all and the noise got louder, ended up finding peices of the flexplate/torque converter comming appart, so I guess it was just a coincidence that inj 4 let go at same time, we were chasin 2 seperate problems, I am just wondering about the state of the tranny,Allison, as the customer had towed it in with the eng off and the driveshaft still on, I guess tomorow will tell more.

Flexplate back ordered til Tuesday, so we will try it after hopefully all ok, Cust towed it himself so its nobody fault but his own! We have noone near us to bench test these trannys, we are in Northern Ont. but its not to long to slap er in and try. ALso these garbage truck dont get an easy life, its more than likely 100% throtle for 30 ft at a time from house to house.

Needless to say we pulled the truck outside while we wait for parts, as the weather dont allow us to open the shop doors yet.

That trans IS junk, the question is, how long before it fails.

I'm not sure the whole transmission is junk. The Allison guy here was telling me that a 3000 series can be converted to a 3500 if the customer wants by simply swapping the rear planetary which unbolts from the rear of the transmission and can be done in the truck. I wouldn't guess that much rotation could be transmitted too far into the forward part of the transmission so I would guess that the rear parts such as bushings could be inspected/replaced as necessary and put the thing back together. I would call Allison on it for sure.
