How do you rewind the spring on a trailer ramp door so that it will help you raise the ramp to close it? Is the door supposed to be open or closed when you tighten the spring?

Over head spring?

Closed - wind it with a couple of 1/2 round hot roll bars - they need to seat well, it will slap your hands hard if the bars slip. Don't even think of putting your head in the arc of the adjustment bars. Mine are 18 in long.

The door on my trailer is pretty long 7'6". I had a problem with the wire getting tangled when we put the door up so what I did was lift the door with me and another guy inside. The spring mechanism on my door is a solid bar with a garage door spring on either side with 2 cables welded to the door/Ramp. I pulled on the cable on one side while he looped the cable on the other side. Then he pulled the cable so I could loop my side. I think we did it about 2 times and we were done. since the door was up there was minimal tension on the cable and it only took about 5 min. The best part is almost no effort is needed to lift the heavy *** door now, and NO tools were needed.

I had never thought about wedging a cable to make up the other side. They can get heavy and some use thinwall tube that will crank.

If it will balance 3 ft up the tension is normally right, I have seen one with the wrong sheves. 20 # at 3 ft to lay on the ground with less than 10# down at the ground.
